Westmere Butchers wins the Supreme Award at the Dunningham’s Great NZ Sausage Competition (again).

The results are out and the best butcher in the suburb of Westmere, Auckland has cleaned up again. With a pork and leek sausage they take home the bacon with the Supreme Award. Kua mau te wehi (awesome work) to the team at Westmere Butchers. As Dave Rossiter from Westmere Butchery said; “It’s brilliant, just fantastic. It’s a real team effort – we always put our heads together when deciding what to make and it’s a bit of trial and error throughout the year, and a lot of love and it’s paid off this year.”

I did not judge at this year’s competition due to due prior commitments. However I look forward to sampling some of these sausages when I am in Auckland in the next ten days. When I have judged the Great NZ Sausage Competition previously I have been on a panel with the master butcher, Dave Rossiter. He certainly knows how to craft an exquisite snarler. This is the sixth time Westmere Butchery has won the Supreme Award.

This sausage is a moderately flavoured pork sausage, with lots of leek to complement the pork. You can see the leek in the sausage. It has a medium grind with small hints of pepper. It is an excellent sausage that will appeal to the kiwi palate.

It is also good to see Wellington butcher’s talents being recognised. The Polish Sausage Company, Cameron Harrison Butchery and Delicatessen, Four Square Martinborough and Greytown Butchery all taking home awards.

My preferred sausage from Westmere Butchery is Italian banderia. I brought some of these when I visited the butchers to accompany the Pork and Leek.

Price per kilo: $22.95
